Is online pornography hurting the real porn industry?

From working at a video store, over time I have observed the type of customers that come in and hire adult DVDs. Often middle-aged males or couples, almost never young single males – whom I suspect are the number one consumer of such products. Where are these men getting their fix instead? The internet is the obvious answer. Of the people that still come to video stores - the older age groups obviously account for those that are still computer illiterate. Couples on the other hand prefer DVDs probably due to their simplicity: pop in the disc and you have porn, searching for it online might take away the romantic mood couples tend to desire. You can also watch a DVD in the lounge or in the bedroom where there are often television sets and DVD players, whereas the computer would most likely be located in places that are undesirable or at least inconvenient for couples to conduct sexual activity.
For the single person however, the internet is perhaps the most desirable means to fulfil one’s solo sexual needs. One, it avoids the unnecessary awkwardness of being seen in the dodgy corner of the video store or the uncomfortable exchanges with the store clerk (even though we try to make it as easy as possible). Another reason is perhaps that the internet allows for customisation and on-demand watching. One does not need to sit through the title credits, boring storyline build-ups. Instead, you can get straight into the action. Many free porn website offers trimmed down versions or specific sections of full length features that get to the point: oral, vaginal, anal, money shot. No time is wasted nor does it have any of the problems that can be associated with DVDs such as scratching or skipping. All you need is a good internet connection. The internet also allows more variety divided into respective categories: fetishes, ethnicity, age-groups, form of penetrations, animated or even amateur uploads by everyday people just like the web-surfers themselves. Suddenly, the shelve-full of blonds with large breast doesn’t seem so appealing. While many large adult oriented corporations such as Playboy and Hustler have tried to take a slice of the online porn industry, but their expensive membership fees can turn away so many when there’s free porn that can be accessed much more easily. One cannot help but to belief that the online porn community is hurting the real porn industry. Maybe one day, the video-based industry would disappear altogether and there won’t be any more real porn for those to rip or upload onto the internet, what then?
