Personally I enjoyed the lecture about the online activities and the second life. The main reason was not just the lecture itself but the whole discussion about this topic and my own thought process.
There are many issues to discuss but due to the words limit I explore the following matters:
When people have partners, like the married couples, they try to be with one another as much as they can. Of course, individually the married couple may do their own individual activities and they may have their own personal friends (preferably from the same gender). Overall, the couple live together and they try to do things collectively. When it comes to the second life, and when it comes to the developing relationships in it, a married person becomes less present in his/her real relationship. The more s/he becomes present in the second life, the less time s/he spends with her/his real partner; and that is in terms of physical and emotional presence. I guess everyone in a relationship needs to find a right balance to do things in private; also the reason and intention of doing things in private matters too. Most people do not like their partners find certain things, such as intimacy and or sex, outside of their relationship.
This virtual activity also could impact the presence of other people as well in terms of spending more time online and less time in reality. For example a student needs to find a right balance of spending time online, playing games, and or living an imaginary life. In fact it was found that imagination is a healthy thing and fantasy and fantasy games and thoughts are like a tool which prepares a person to trial things before practice. So the online second life could be a tool which helps everyone to play and live their imagination.
It seems like any other matter, the online activities can be good and bad for different people. When it comes to sex, there is not a simple judgement really. For example, looking for the sexual partners online could be considered as cheating. Usually such people seek sex when they find other opportunities and or when travelling too. However, masturbating while being online may not be as cheating. For example, due to the men’s culture of masturbation and the strong market of sex, many men have sexual addictions with or without their knowledge. So when it comes to online virtual world, most people feed their addictions and in a relatively easy, private and convenient way. The last statistics I remember was that over eighty percent of the internet traffic was relating to the pornographic sites!
